Kiva

Kiva.org introduces an interesting new kind of microfinancing. Kiva financially assists worldwide entrepreneurs by allowing any person to loan money to these entrepreneurs. After six months, the same amount of money is returned to you through the site. You can loan anywhere from $25 to thousands, and each entrepreneur receives a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the business and if it is started by an individual or group. I have yet to loan any money to an individual or group, but plan to very soon. I find the idea of this sort of microfinancing to be not only an fascinating new form of giving, but also an interesting use of technology.

  1. Our homeroom last year started a Kiva account. We raised some money for it an spent many homerooms just deciding who to fund and then tracking their progress. It is a great site and a nice way to fund people in developing countries.

  2. Just like technculture44, my class did the same thing. It's actually an incredibly interesting site. You can also see how highly the organization that the person is associated with ranks, as well as how often they default. It is really easily to do, and a great way to help others in need. You can also see how much they need, and why the need it. Each person has their own profile, and it is a really rewarding process for all.

    Thanks!
