Youtube and Music

Sure, Youtube is great way for companies like Universal Music Group, one of the top subscribed channels on the site, to broadcast their new songs, but it is also a fantastic way to let the small people express themselves through song.

Perhaps you have heard of Dave Days, Venetian Princess, Julia Nunes from her channel jaaaaaaa, or Hank Green from his channel vlogbrothers. Then there is also Marie Digby, who, after creating a channel with videos of her singing in May 2006, had her first single released on iTunes in August of 2007. Alan Lastufka, from the Youtube channel fallofautumndistro, and Hank Green created DFTBA, which stands for Don't Forget To Be Awesome. DFTBA Records is a record company for Youtube singers. This enables Youtubers to make albums when through Youtube when they otherwise could not.

It is remarkable to me how these people have done so well for themselves through the medium of Youtube. Without Youtube, they would have never been recognized and would have never been able to release an album. Youtube also allows these singers to post their music regularly. Fans don't have to wait months or even years for an artist to come out with a new single or album, because the Youtuber can post a video with their new original song or cover as often as they like. Hank Green, who posts videos to his brother John Green was challenged to post a video of himself singing a song every other Wednesday back in 2007. After a short time, he had enough songs to make an album, and an audience already there ready to buy it. That is the other great part of Youtube, they already have fans who will buy their first album without even needing to advertise.

This is all just another way that the Internet has changed our lives so drastically through the way we listen to and hear about music.

  1. That is so interesting! It is amazing how many current artists are discovered on Youtube; its a really great thing- individuals are sometimes just posting videos for family and friends but end up with a real career.

  2. yeah i agree, it's pretty amazing how many people can be discovered through youtube and how much is discovered on that site. Countless people have become recognized through things they post on youtube.

  3. Very true. I believe that the Youtube has given people a chance to share their work with others in way they couldn't before. People are gathering fan bases and are becoming more popular through these means as well.
