Glee Contest

I don't know if you guys have heard of the new hit television show in the States called Glee, but it is a personal favorite of mine. In fact, I am a Gleek, the term invented for a fan of the show. The show is about a high school glee club (singing and dancing) and their struggles to win regionals as well as their struggles with regular teenage life.

This summer there were many contests to gain fans and publicity for the show when the second episode would premiere come 9 September. I did not participate in any of these contests but one in particular caught my eye. Most contests involved sending in a video of you singing. Seventeen Magazine, however, had a contest that really involved technology. After submitting a video of themselves singing, Gleeks were encouraged to talk up the show on Twitter, MySpace, Youtube, and Facebook. The judges took into account not only the talent of the video, but also how often they mentioned the show. Some people even changed their profile picture, their thumb and pointer finger in the "loser" symbol, the image of the show. The grand prize winner won a trip to LA to meet and dine with the cast. Other winners received Glee T-shirts, hats, and signed photographs.

I thought this was an incredibly smart idea of Seventeen Magazine. This really gets the word out through an entirely different source of media. People might not listen to adverts on television or at the side of a Facebook homepage, but if you read about it on someone's status, you are much more likely to pay attention.

  1. The internet is becoming the foremost place for advertising... I agree- that is really smart of 17 Magazine. Not only does it promote the magazine, but also the show. I think this will become more and more common...
